James Eyre-Walker, Managing Director

After graduating from the University of St. Andrews with a BSc in Zoology & Psychology in 1982, James joined and trained with Coopers & Lybrand in Birmingham. Shortly after he qualified in 1985, he joined Howsons as Audit Manager in 1986 and became a partner in 1989, specialising in financial reporting, auditing and corporate finance. “At the time,” he says, “I hadn’t expected to stay on in the profession, because I wanted to be involved in running a business, but, by becoming a partner, I was running a business!” In 2004 he gained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with the Open University.

In addition to overseeing the affairs of a diverse, largely corporate, client base, James specialises in audit, financial reporting and corporate finance. He is an Associate Member of the Academy of Experts providing expert witness reports in court proceedings.

James has been active in the community (having been governor of two schools and at Stoke College) and within the profession. He has been President of the Staffs, Salop & Wolverhampton of Society of Chartered Accountants on three occasions (2000/01, 2014/15 and 2015/16), chairs their Courses & Conferences Committee and sits on the ICAEW National Technical Advisory Committee. “I think it is important that I put something back into the community and profession which has treated me so well.”

Away from the office, James works his two Cocker Spaniels as often as his professional work allows, researches family history (which he has traced back to Normandy before 1066) and has travelled widely, both on business and for pleasure. He is married to Liz (who works part-time within the business as its credit controller) and has one son working as a computer programmer.


“Howsons has seen a lot of changes over the years,” he says, “but we have managed those changes effectively and I am very happy with the current shape of the firm and what is has to offer, now and in the future.”

Julie Boyle, Agricultural Director

Julie has a wide portfolio of clients and advises in all areas of accountancy and taxation for owner managed businesses including sole traders, partnership, limited companies and tax only clients.

Julie has specialised in farming and agricultural tax and accounts for over 20 years and has gained an extensive knowledge of farming and farm related businesses. Her clients include farmers, land owners, agricultural contractors, agricultural consultants, agricultural engineers and diversified farm businesses. Julie likes to understand her client’s needs and aspirations and is actively involved in tax planning, looking at ways to save taxes whether it be income tax, capital gains tax or by carrying out inheritance tax planning exercises.

Over the years, she has also gained some valuable professional agricultural contacts.

Tom Godwin, Trainee Accountant (ACCA)

Tom started with Howsons in October 2015. He is AAT qualified and currently studying to become ACCA qualified. Tom works in the Agricultural department and deals with clients both in the farming community and a range of other business sectors. My role includes bookkeeping, preparing and submitting VAT returns, preparing accounts for Limited and personal companies and also submitting personal and company tax returns.

Emily joined Howsons in June 2017 as part of the Agricultural department. She is currently studying for her AAT qualification and will then be going on to study to become a Chartered Accountant. Her role includes preparing accounts for a mixture of client types, primarily Farmers.

Paris joined Howsons in September 2018 as part of the Agricultural department. Her role includes preparing accounts for a mixture of client types, primarily Farmers. She is currently studying for her AAT qualification and will then be going on to study to become a Chartered Accountant.

Audit & Assurance

James Parr FCCA, Audit Director

As Audit Director, James manages the firm’s audit and assurance clients, and specialises in financial reporting for a range of entities, from small companies and charities, up to large, privately owned groups. James works closely with the firm’s managing director, James Eyre-Walker to ensure all statutory audit and accounts, and tax requirements are met. James is also a part of the firm’s Corporate Finance team, successfully obtaining finance and business sales for a number of client’s.

Born and educated in Stafford, James joined the Howsons management team in 2011, after spending 14 years in public practice with two national firms in the area local to Stafford, qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2007.

In his spare time, James enjoys spending time with his family, such as watching his children play football for local teams and going to live music concerts.

Haseeb Ahmed, Audit Semi-Senior Trainee (ACA)

Haseeb joined Howsons in August 2016 already having 2.5 years audit experience behind him. He now works in our Audit department as a semi-senior auditor with a mixed client base while continuing to study for his ACA. Haseeb enjoys working closely with clients to provide highest level of service and building strong relationships. Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family and learning about his religion.

Ryan Scragg, Audit Trainee (AAT)

Ryan started at Howsons in September 2015 undertaking the Audit Junior role. Ryan as recently completed his AAT qualification and is currently studying towards the certificate level of ACA. His role invovles working with a wide range of clients, from multinational companies to small independent Charitites, completing all aspects of audit work.

In Ryan’s spare time he enjoys playing Golf and football on a regular basis, going to the gym and socialising with friends.

Zoe Barlow, Audit Trainee (ACA)

Zoe joined Howsons Audit Team in October 2017 following a year working within a local General Accountancy Practice. Having graduated with a degree in Forensic Accounting from the University of South Wales, she is now studying towards her ICAEW Charted Accountancy qualification.

Working closely with other members of the Audit team, Zoe carries out Audits and independent examinations for a variety of clients allowing her to enhance her knowledge.

Away from the office Zoe enjoys travelling and spending time with her family and friends.

Accounts

Rebecca Williams FCA, General Practice Director

Becky joined Howsons in 2001 after graduating from Staffordshire University in Accounting and Law. She qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2004 and became a manager in 2007.

Becky is now General Practice Director with a large portfolio of clients from a wide variety of business sectors. Her clients include sole trades, partnerships, limited companies and charities. Becky specialises in corporate accounts and charities.

Becky works closely with her clients in the start-up of their businesses, advising on the most tax efficient trading vehicle for them and providing comfort that they are meeting all their filing requirements.

Becky assists her clients with all their accounting and taxation requirements. She will provide support during HMRC enquiries and is always looking for tax savings that may be made by the company, directors or business owners.

When Becky isn’t working she is spending time with her 2 daughters and has recently started running. If there are any spare hours in the day she enjoys a good book and glass of wine.

John Glover, Bureau Supervisor

John joined Howsons in 2006 and has worked in Payroll for over 40 years, previously managing a payroll for a large company with over 1000 weekly paid employees. He has more than 120 clients in the payroll bureau, paid weekly, fortnightly, 4 weekly and monthly. He is also responsible for Auto Enrolment, CIS Contractors monthly returns and P11D’s.

Johns other role as Company Secretarial support means he can be a constant support for the trading life of a Company. When it comes to the important documents to formalise dividends, the appointment and resignation of directors or even changes in shareholdings John will remove the stress and ensure the process is professional and efficient. In addition to maintaining a detailed Company database, statutory books and filing minutes and resolutions, John is responsible for the submission of accounts to Companies House.

Outside of work, Johns time is mostly taken up with his 3 children and 7 grandchildren. He is an enthusiastic gardener and when he has any spare time he loves to read and do a spot of DIY.

Angela Whittaker, Accountant

Angela started to train with a firm of Chartered Accounts in Stafford at the age of 16 and joined Howsons’ Leek office in May 1981. In November 2014, Angela moved to the Stoke office. Over the years, I have dealt with all aspects of clients’ accounts and have a portfolio of clients that I have dealt with, many for over 30 years.

Angela’s favourite pastime is visiting her holiday home in New Quay, Wales and enjoying the coastal walks and scenery.

Scott Cadman ACCA, General Assistant Manager

Scott joined as an apprentice straight from college in October 2010 after completing his A Levels. He has since studied with Howsons and became a Chartered Certified Accountant in August 2015. Scott is now currently futhering his studies and working to become a Chartered Tax Advisor, specialising in owner managed business and corporation tax. In his role within the general practice, Scott mainly prepares statutory accounts, corporation tax returns, VAT returns, management accounts and self-assessment tax returns but also helps with any additional work required by our clients.

Scott is also a Xero certified trainer and is our resident Sage expert.

In his spare time, Scott enjoys watching Stoke City Football Club where he is a season ticket holder. Scott is also the captain of his local pool team, who compete in and around Stoke on Trent.

 

Vicki Davenport, Accounts Senior

Vicki joined Howsons General Practice department in June 2000, where she gained her AAT qualification. Vicki’s role involves the preparation of company accounts and corporation tax returns. She also deals with regular book-keeping and management accounts clients and assists within the Payroll department.

Outside of work, Vicki has two young children that keep her very busy with their various social activities. On a Sunday morning, she can be found on the side of the football pitch cheering her sons’ football team on!

Ian Watt, Trainee Accountant (ACA)

Ian joined the General Practice department in September 2016. Ian graduated from Cardiff University in 2012 and he spent a year working in forensic accounting at Deloitte and gained experience in Audit at Dains LLP. He is currently studying towards his ACA qualification and has recently passed the Professional Level.

Ian’s key responsibilities include accounts preparation for sole traders, partnerships and private companies. In addition he assists with Corporation Tax and VAT returns.

When away from the office, Ian enjoys playing 5-a-side football on a regular basis and watching his favourite team Aston Villa.

Clara Tooth, Trainee Accountant (ACCA)

Clara joined Howsons as a school leaver in August 2015 as a trainee in the General Practice Team. She is currently studying towards the ACCA qualification, having already attained the full AAT qualification in January 2019.

Clara’s day to day tasks include assisting in the preparation of accounts for both incorporated and unincorporated clients, completion of VAT and self Assessment Tax returns.

In her spare time Clara enjoys working out at the gym and regularly takes trips away to explore the world (handy that her dad is a travel agent!)

Amy Lees, Trainee Accountant (AAT)

Amy joined Howsons in August 2016 as a Trainee Accountant in the General Practice Team. Amy is currently studying the final level of her AAT qualification and hopes to move on to study ATT.

Amy spends the majority of the year working in the General Practice Team where she deals with various Sole Trade, Partnerships and Company accounts as well as completing Self-Assessment Tax, Corporation Tax and VAT returns. Amy assists our Tax Director once a week to help towards the preparation of more complex tax returns. She also spends three months of the year in the Audit Team where she examines and evaluates the financial accounts of various companies.

In Amy’s Spare time she enjoys relaxing, Socialising and the occasional shopping spree!

Jordan Benton, Trainee Accountant (AAT)

Jordan joined Howsons in August 2018 and is the newest member in the General Practice Team. He deals with various Sole Traders, Partnerships and Companies. Jordan is currently studying for his AAT qulifications which he hopes will give him a strong grounding in accountancy before going on to become a Chartered Accountant.

Jordan spends a lot of his time playing football which sees him travelling up and down the country to ply his trade.

Vicky Hulse CTA ATT fellow ADIT TEP, Tax Director

Starting her tax career in 1997, Vicky became a member of the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) in 1999 (now a fellow), and qualified as a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) just two years later and was admitted as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in early 2002.

Vicky came to Howsons as a mixed tax senior mainly involved in corporate taxes but also in more complex personal tax, PAYE, tax investigation and tax planning/advisory work touching on inheritance and succession.

Progressing quickly through assistant manager and manager roles Vicky became one of the first in the UK to attain the internationally recognised Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) and more latterly took the first sitting of the fast-track into the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) for Accountants and Tax Practitioners in 2011 adding international tax and trusts to her specific areas of expertise.

With over 20 years’ experience (15 years post qualification) Vicky now heads our private client and tax specialist sector as tax director. In her own words: “I constantly strive for excellence and look forward to the next challenge”.

Cath Fettes, Practice Administrator

After a joint honours degree in Mathematics and Physics at Hull University, Cath took a position with Spicer and Oppenheim (now Deloitte & Touche) in Croydon.

In March 1990 Cath returned to Stoke-on-Trent and joined Howsons in Leek as PA to the senior partner. Twelve months later she took on the role of Practice Administrator. “It is a very varied and often challenging role and we always strive for continuous improvement”. She has been involved in the development of the time / fee recording system and in 2012 became the firm’s Money Laundering Regulation Officer.

Cath is an active member of the Guide Association. She is Chair of Finance for Girlguiding Staffordshire and was Chair of Finance for Girlguiding Midlands between 2011 and 2016; she also runs a Guide Unit in Endon. She is also involved in her local community being Treasurer of Baddeley Green & Stockton Brook Community Association.

In her “spare” time Cath enjoys spending time on the allotment that she shares with her neighbours.

Tracy Foxall, Office Administrator

Tracy joined Howsons in June 1986 aged 21. She has had various roles during her career with us and currently works in the Reception for 4 days per week, which gives her a good work/life balance. She has lived all her life in the Tunstall/Burslem area of Stoke on Trent, and has been married for 30 years and has 2 children. For recreation she enjoys horse-riding, walking her dog and spend weekends away with her husband and friends.

Aminah Henry, Administrator

Aminah joined Howsons in August 2017 as part of the Administration Team. Main areas of responsibility is the Practice Database, Website/ Social Media Management, Archive Management and providing support to the Directors.

Aminah enjoys spending time with her son, eating out, running and holidays away with her boyfriend and friends.

Tracy Davies, Receptionist / Typist

Tracy joined Howsons in February 2013 as a part time Receptionist/Typist. She works closely with Tracy Foxall to ensure the front of house runs smoothly and addresses the core administrative needs of the business. Tracy’s role involves being the first point of contact for clients and supporting the directors including preparing documents, audio dictating, managing the scanning and storing of documents for our Cloud Database filing system, known as Virtual Cabinet.

Tracy is married with a son and daughter and lives just over the border in Cheshire.

Liz Eyre-Walker

Liz originally trained as a medical secretary and spent years in the health sector. Liz took a career break to raise her sons and look after her small holding. Since 2001, Liz has been a School Administrator at a local primary school and more recently, joined Howsons on a part time basis.

We all like our finances straight and orderly – so do we at Howsons. As our credit controller, Liz really appreciates it when you pay for our services promptly.
